This program is staffed by a Midwife and two Community Workers.

Healthy communities start with healthy pregnant women.

The midwifery program provides holistic care to the women in Maningrida. It is both woman and family centred with education and preventative care at its core.

We empower the women of Maningrida by providing a safe space for education and care, and advocation for client needs regarding specialist services.

Midwifery care can extend from preconception to 6 weeks into the postnatal period and is then handed over to Women’s Health Nurse/Child Health Nurse. On average, there are 30 births annually for Maningrida.

Our midwifery team provides the following services:

  • Telehealth appointments with GP on the second Tuesday of every month
  • Due to the high incidence of chronic disease in Maningrida, most women require complex care that is shared with Maternity/Midwifery Group Practice. In preparation for delivery at RDH, women are supported by the midwifery team in conjunctions with PATS to travel to Darwin at around 37 weeks gestation for ‘sit-down’ (ongoing care and birth planning).
  • A monthly visiting sonographer allows for most women in early pregnancy to have a dating scan. Foetal growth and wellbeing scans occur locally to minimise travel to Darwin.
  • We host outreach obstetric and gynaecological clinics for follow up care.

Two funded Strong Women, Strong Babies, Strong Culture positions ensure that women engaged in the antenatal service benefit from a culturally connected approach to pregnancy and the early motherhood journey.

In the future the midwifery program would like to aim to extend services to include antenatal classes involving mothers, aunties, partners, and family.
